Secret Service members from Biden’s department now protect Trump

Following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump last month in Butler, Pennsylvania, the Secret Service temporarily withdrew some of President Joe Biden’s security detail to protect his predecessor.

An agency official said The New York Times that it is unusual to assign members of a president’s Secret Service to a candidate, but the move came after the increasing threat of violence against Trump and because of Biden’s limited travel schedule since dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. As an additional protective measure, the Secret Service has also procured bulletproof glass to protect Trump at future outdoor rallies.

On July 13, the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to climb onto a roof and aim at Trump from about 120 meters away while he was giving a campaign speech. A bullet grazed Trump’s ear, killing one rally attendee and wounding two others. Both the FBI and Congress are investigating the incident.

The Secret Service has taken responsibility, and its former director, Kimberly Cheatle, has been forced to resign. Although the agency is expecting what may be the most serious presidential security breach since the assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981, the Secret Service must continue to protect about three dozen current and former officials and their families.

Donald Mihalek, who left the agency in 2019, told the Just that the Secret Service’s methodology “is flexible… and is designed to address known and unknown threats. The steps the Secret Service takes are a natural part of its asymmetric approach to ensure its mission is accomplished flawlessly.”

He added that he has seen members of the president’s team relocated for temporary periods, such as during United Nations events, and noted that the Secret Service’s Presidential Protection Division is used for high-level intelligence operations. It includes hundreds of Secret Service employees who work in various security positions at the White House and travel with the president.

As for the glass protecting Trump, it is unusual for anyone other than the sitting president and vice president to be protected with bulletproof glass because it is heavy and difficult to move, officials said. Just. Normally, the glass is transported on military aircraft, but in Trump’s case, the Secret Service will procure several sets and store them across the country so they can be trucked to all sorts of outdoor rally sites, ABC News noted.

While Trump appeared outdoors at his press conference on Thursday at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, he has not held an outdoor rally since the one in Butler.
