Seattle Mariners end four-game losing streak and beat Oakland Athletics 16-3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mitch Garver and Luis Urías each scored four runs, George Kirby had nine strikeouts in six innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 16-3 on Wednesday night.

Seattle, which entered the day 5 1/2 games back of the final AL wild-card spot, scored a season-high number of runs and ended a four-game losing streak to get back to .500 at 70-70. The Mariners scored seven times in the seventh inning and pulled away, sending 12 batters to the plate. They scored four more runs in the eighth inning.

“Just a tough game for everybody,” said Seattle manager Dan Wilson. “There’s a lot of special things that can happen in the last few games here at this club.”

Kirby (11-10) improved his record against the A’s to 5-0 over the course of his career and had eight strikeouts in the first four innings.

The 26-year-old said he made a small mental adjustment after allowing five runs in a loss to the Angels last week by “just playing it out” and trusting in his ability.

“I’ve just been thinking too much the last few weeks,” Kirby said. “I’m always at my best when I just go for it and just attack the guys.”

Leading by one in the fourth inning, the Mariners scored four consecutive hits with two outs against A’s starter JP Sears (11-10) to extend their lead to 5-1. After Victor Robles got on base with a double, Garver singled for his third run of the game. Urías and Dylan Moore each followed with RBI hits.

“Two-out RBIs are so important and a real backbreaker on the other side,” Wilson said. “Our guys threw some great at-bats and gave George what he needed to take the lead.”

Urías opened the seventh with a solo home run, and then the next six Mariners reached the bases to tie the game. Julio Rodríguez, Randy Arozarena and Victor Robles all hit runs to give Seattle a 12-2 lead. A’s relief pitcher Janson Junk accounted for all seven runs and made no outs, allowing six hits and two walks. Oakland allowed a season-high 16 runs.

“Tonight, being able to score a couple of runs was really good, but I was even more impressed with how the at-bats continued from the seventh to the ninth inning,” Garver said. “Because when you get an eight- to 10-run lead, a lot of times you give away at-bats, but we kept going and scored a couple more.”

During their penultimate home game at the Coliseum, the A’s drew 4,390 spectators on Wednesday.

“I’m obviously pretty upset about it,” Sears said of his performance. “We played good baseball and it’s my job to give our team a chance to win the game. In the fourth inning, when there were already two outs, it got a little out of control. I felt really competitive the whole game. I felt like I had the game pretty well under control. Actually, I wasn’t bad, but of course I didn’t get the results.”

Lawrence Butler set a franchise record when he had an extra-base hit for the ninth consecutive game with a leadoff double. Butler then scored the A’s first run on a single by Brent Rooker.
