TAMPA, Fla. – Some schools in the Tampa Bay area are still closed after Hurricane Milton brought severe flooding and strong wind gusts to Florida.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

Hillsborough County Public Schools will remain closed until Friday, October 11th. School district officials said the decision allows the county to convert schools into emergency shelters for those who need to evacuate and gives families and district staff time to prepare their own storm plans.

In addition, Westminster Academy will also be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from October 8th to 9th. Monday will be a normal day, but no after-school care will be offered, officials said.

PASCO COUNTY

Pasco County Schools announced that all schools and district offices will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (October 7-9). All extracurricular activities, sporting events and extracurricular programs are also canceled for these days. The district said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

Families and staff are encouraged to follow the district’s website and social media channels for the latest information.

PINELLAS COUNTY

All schools and offices in Pinellas County will remain closed until Friday, October 11th. All sports and school activities scheduled for these dates are also canceled.

POLK COUNTY

In a statement, the system said: “Based on the most current forecast, we do not expect significant weather in Polk County tomorrow, Monday, October 7th. As a result, all PCPS schools and offices will remain open during regular hours tomorrow.”

However, we will be canceling or postponing Monday’s after-school programs and sporting events. For specific information about postponed events, we recommend contacting your child’s school directly.

Please note that all PCPS schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, October 8, Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10 in response to this storm.

MANATEE COUNTY

In a statement, the school system said: “All schools in the Manatee County School District will remain closed from Monday, October 7th through Wednesday, October 9th. All school activities, including athletics, are canceled Monday through Wednesday.”

“Information for the remainder of the week will be provided after the storm has passed, shelter operations have been completed and teams have had an opportunity to assess the condition of district campuses.”

HERNANDO COUNTY

A statement said: “This afternoon, the Hernando County Emergency Operations Center activated local authorities to prepare for Tropical Storm Milton. As a result, all Hernando schools and district offices will remain closed Tuesday and Wednesday (October 8-9). A decision on reopening is expected to be made mid-week. During this closure, all before and after school care services will be suspended and all extracurricular activities and sporting events will be canceled or postponed.

CITRUS COUNTY

The Citrus County School District has worked closely with Citrus County Emergency Management to prepare for the impacts of Hurricane Milton.

Because the timing of Milton has adjusted, indicating that Milton will be felt in our region into early Thursday morning, schools will also remain closed on Thursday, October 10th and Friday, October 11th .

All after-school extracurricular activities are also canceled for the rest of the week.

SARASOTA COUNTY

All traditional public schools will remain closed Monday, October 7, through Wednesday, October 9, in preparation for possible shelter openings. District officials said to pay attention to emails and text messages for updates.

SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY

Saint Leo University will be closed and classes canceled at its Tampa area campuses from Monday, October 7 through Thursday, October 10:

• University Campus (33701 County Road 52, St. Leo, FL 33574)
• Tampa Education Center (1403 N. Howard Ave., Tampa, FL 33607)
• Center for Adult Education (University campuses and Pasco-Hernando State College campuses)

All Saint Leo employees are expected to report to work Monday to prepare their workplaces for the storm, university officials said.

USF

The University of South Florida announced Thursday that all campuses will remain closed through at least Saturday, Oct. 12, after officials inspected the university’s facilities.

A decision on resuming the normal class schedule Oct. 14 will be made after USF teams can more accurately assess each campus and conditions in the Tampa Bay area, officials said. The university is working to reopen residence halls and dining facilities to students as quickly as possible.

UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA

ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE

In a statement, the school said: “The college will remain in place.” open on Monday, October 7th. All locations and offices will be closed from Tuesday, October 8th to Wednesday, October 9th.
