Sarasota Airport suffers the loss of the entire concourse roof at Milton

SARASOTA, Fla. – Hurricane Milton’s 100-mile-per-hour wind gusts within its powerful eyewall were no match for the Sarasota airport Wednesday evening, which suffered severe damage.

Sarasota-Bradenton Airport (SRQ) officials investigating the aftermath determined that the hurricane had ripped off the entire roof of Concourse B, which houses the checkpoint and all 13 aircraft loading gates.

Additionally, photos from the airport show extensive debris and water damage to gates and waiting areas, while another general building outside was nearly destroyed.

Therefore, the airport will remain closed until 9 a.m. on October 16, officials said.

“The SRQ team is working hard,” airport officials said. “Cleanup work and repairs have already begun.”

While Milton’s official landing point was designated as Siesta Keys, weather instruments at the airport confirmed the eye and its strong eyewalls came through the airport.

Winds steadily increased throughout Wednesday evening, initially reaching hurricane-force gusts as it reached the front of the eyewall around 7:15 p.m. ET, gusting to 90 mph. Extreme winds continued to blow from the east for approximately half an hour, including gusts of 92 and 93 miles per hour.

As the eye approached, the wind gradually died down after 8:30 p.m., and calm winds were reported by 9:00 p.m

But soon after, the gusts from the northwest increased again as the back of the eyewall broke through. Sustained winds near 70 mph with four recorded gusts above 90 mph, including a gust of 97 and 102 mph.

The airport stopped transmitting weather data minutes later, likely due to power outages.
