Saquon Barkley breaks out to a season-high, leading the Eagles to a stunning win over the Giants

The New York Giants couldn’t stop Saquon Barkley on Sunday afternoon.

Barkley recorded nearly 200 rushing yards and led the Philadelphia Eagles to a dominant 28-3 win over his former team at MetLife Stadium, moving the Eagles to 4-2 on the year. Not only was it his best day since joining the Eagles this season, but it was also his best rushing performance in years.

Barkley finished the season with a season-high 176 rushing yards on 17 carries, securing a stunning victory that kept the Eagles at the top of the NFC East race, just behind the Washington Commanders. He also managed three runs of more than 35 yards during the game, something the NFL hasn’t seen since Isaiah Crowell played for the New York Jets in the 2018 season.

Barkley’s afternoon fell short of his career high when he posted 189 rushing yards against the Washington Commanders in 2019. It was also the second-best rushing day for a running back against their former team in NFL history.

Barkley got the Eagles on the field first with a 3-yard rush midway through the second quarter. At the start of that drive, he completed a 55-yard run to set up the easy touchdown run as well.

The Eagles scored again on their next drive after Jalen Hurts hit AJ Brown on a fourth down attempt for a deep 41-yard touchdown, giving them a 14-point lead at halftime.

Then in the second half, the Eagles scored on consecutive drives to tie the game, both with 1-yard touchdown runs by Hurts right at the goal line. Barkley was successful on both drives, first with a 49-yard demolition and then a 41-yard gain.

By the time the second tush-push touchdown was on the board, the game was essentially over. Barkley, who had 176 rushing yards at the end of the third quarter, and the Eagles cruised to a 25-point victory.

Things got so bad for the Giants in the fourth quarter that they actually pulled starting quarterback Daniel Jones in favor of Drew Lock. Jones was sacked seven times before being pulled and completed just 14 of 21 for 99 yards. Lock didn’t do much better as the game went on. He went just 3 of 8 for six yards.

Hurts completed 10 of 14 throws for 114 yards and a touchdown. He also managed 22 yards on seven carries on the ground with his two rushing touchdowns. Brown had 89 receiving yards and his touchdown on five catches. Hurts now has six career games with a passing touchdown and multiple rushing touchdowns, which is the second-most in the modern era behind Cam Newton.

Barkley now has 658 rushing yards this season, the most of any Eagles running back through the first six games of a season in team history. Barkley entered the game averaging just over 96 rushing yards per contest, a number he nearly doubled on Sunday. His production was also the highest the Giants have allowed a running back in the last decade.

While the Giants obviously have problems on both ends that they need to work out – they’re currently just 2-5 and haven’t won a home game yet this fall – Barkley didn’t hesitate to rush the team that gave him the ball NFL start. He seems to fit in well in Philadelphia.
