Thursday’s game delivers a thrilling NFC West showdown as the Seattle Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers. Both teams suffered disappointing losses in Week 5 and will be looking to bounce back in Week 6. Despite a two-game losing streak, Seattle currently leads the wide-open division by one game over the Niners and Cardinals. Despite an inconsistent start to the season, the 49ers are favorites as they almost scored a field goal on the road.

Closing out plays has been a problem for quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco offense. Second in offensive yards per game – but 29th in red zone touchdown percentage – the Niners move the ball effectively without properly finishing drives. The improving health of receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle gives Purdy some key targets near the end zone, although Kittle was listed as questionable on Wednesday.

Seattle’s defense is flawed – it ranks 20th in rushing yards allowed per game. Giants rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. paced the Seahawks with 129 rushing yards in his first start in Week 5. Lead back Jordan Mason’s consistency complements San Francisco’s strong passing game and could be a key factor in the Niners controlling the clock against Seattle.

The focus of the Seahawks offense is running the ball and protecting quarterback Geno Smith. Running back Kenneth Walker III was ineffective in the Giants’ loss and Smith was sacked seven times. When given time to throw, Seattle’s potent passing game ranks third in yards per game behind the dangerous receiver trio of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba and poses a threat to San Francisco’s defense.

The Niners rank a respectable 10th in yards allowed per game, but have allowed big plays in each of their losses.
