San Fernando Valley to host three sports during Los Angeles Olympics – NBC Los Angeles

When the Olympic Games come to Los Angeles in 2028, events will be held in the San Fernando Valley for the first time.

When Los Angeles hosted the event in 1932 and 1984, the Valley did not host any competitions. But in four years, that will change.

BMX, skateboarding and archery take place in the Sepulveda Basin recreation area.

The news is exciting for many people who live and work in the Valley, but also for fans of sports like BMX that originated in Southern California.

“The BMX history here is huge. A lot of the first pro tracks were here. A lot of the BMX manufacturers were here,” said Tommy Gelinas, founder of the Valley Relics Museum. Part of the museum is dedicated to the sport.

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” Gelinas said. “The fact that we were part of the early beginnings of BMX, which is now an Olympic sport, and now that it’s coming back to the Valley, it’s like everything’s come full circle.”

Nancy Hoffman Vanyek, president of the San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce, knows the Olympics will be great for people and the economy.

“We are the perfect host. If the city of Los Angeles has 4 million residents and 2 million people live here, we are the perfect host and hostess for the people that are coming into our community,” Hoffman Vanyek said. “We are actually five cities, but the majority of it is the city of LA; we have Calabasas, San Fernando, Glendale, Burbank, Hidden Hills. Small small towns, all of those towns are going to be affected as well, whether it’s people going to restaurants, people staying in hotels. It’s all going to trickle down to all of those areas.”

Although it is still four years away, the people in the Valley now seem almost ready to host the games.

“How exciting is it to watch and develop all of this over the next four years until the next Olympic Games?” said Gelinas. “Especially that the sport of BMX started here. And that it is now in the global spotlight is so great for us.”
