Samsung’s next folding phone could get a surprise name change

In July, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Even before that, there were rumors that the company was planning to another foldable phone this year. Originally, it was rumored that this handset would be called the “Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim.”

However, that doesn’t seem to be true. According to leaker Evan Blass (via Tom’s Guide), the phone could be called the “Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition” or “Galaxy Z Fold SE.” This is the latest in a series of rumors about an upcoming Samsung phone that could be different from all the others.

Whatever it’s called, the new phone is expected to have a titanium backplate similar to that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. If this information is correct, it would be Samsung’s first foldable to use titanium for its backplate, as previous models used stainless steel or carbon fiber reinforced plastic instead. However, the switch to titanium means the special edition phone will likely not have S Pen support like the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

We also recently heard that the new foldable phone will have the same aspect ratio as Samsung’s current flagship. If true, that would mean it would have a wider screen than the regular Galaxy Z Fold 6. The report also mentioned that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim/Special Edition could have a 6.5-inch cover display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The new phone could also have an 8.7-inch inner display instead of the 7.6-inch display on the regular Galaxy Z Fold 6.

If you’re wondering why Samsung is planning to launch this foldable device at the end of the year, you’re not alone. So far, the company has only released one Galaxy Z Fold model each year. What’s even stranger is that the new model may only launch in China and South Korea, while a global release is less likely.

Hopefully Samsung will come clean soon. Stay tuned.
