BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Samford University football team opened the 2024 season with an impressive 3-1 victory over Tennessee Tech on Thursday night at Shauna Yelton Field.

“It was hot and humid, and it was tough for both teams,” said Samford’s head coach Todd Yelton said. “I don’t think I’m ever too sad when we score three goals because generally we’re pretty good defensively. I’m proud of the boys, they worked hard and fought.”

The Bulldogs initially took the lead when Anna Major scored a goal in the 29th^th Minute after an assist from Clare NicholasThe teams went to the locker room at halftime with Samford leading 1-0.

In the second half, things got more and more exciting, Samford extended its lead to 2-0 when Layton Glisson scored an assist from Brooklyn MillerTennessee Tech came back when Neve Renwick scored a goal in the 59th minute off an assist from Abigal Davis.^th Minute to 2:1. Samford scored the last goal when Fleming Dean scored in the 79^th Minute after an assist from Brigid McElderry.

Glisson led Samford to the win with five shots, while Renwick had four shots for Tennessee Tech. Mia Krusinski played the first half as goalkeeper for Samford and blocked one shot while not allowing a goal. Peyton Hull played the second half, stopping four shots and allowing one goal. Maggie Conrad played the entire game as goalie for Tennessee Tech, stopping four shots and allowing three goals.

Samford hosts 15^th-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday, August 18 at 6 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. Admission to the game is free.
