Sam Darnold looks “better” than he did on the Jets: Sauce Gardner

LONDON – For Jets fans, the sight of Sam Darnold at quarterback for the Vikings on Sunday might bring back some memories.

For Sauce Gardner, he wanted to see what Darnold looked like in a Jets uniform.

Gardner came to the Jets a year after trading Darnold, but as he prepared to face him this week, the Jets cornerback watched film of Darnold when he played for the Jets between 2018 and 2020.

“You know, I saw some of his film when he was with the Jets and you know, it looked, it looked different, you know, you know what I’m saying?” Gardner said.

Yes, Sauce, Jets fans know what you’re saying.

Darnold is off to a great start in his first season in Minnesota.

He leads the league with 11 touchdowns and gives the Vikings a 4-0 start.

“He definitely looked better and different than he did back then, based on the film I saw when he was a jet,” Gardner said.

Gardner said he doesn’t typically go that far back when studying quarterbacks, but was curious about Darnold.

“I was just trying to see what he was like back then, you know, because I always heard that name, but I never actually saw her,” Gardner said. “So I looked and thought, ‘This doesn’t look the same,’ you know?”

Gardner pointed out that having a strong supporting cast around him certainly helps Darnold.

“He looks extremely confident,” Gardner said. “You know, he has the great receivers around him. It just makes his job easier, you know, and the throws he makes, he makes some pretty good throws. He has a big arm.”

This was Gardner’s first time outside the United States.

On the bus ride from the airport in London he got a fright.

“We got on the bus early today,” Gardner said. “I see that they drive on different sides of the road here. When we got on the bus I thought we were going to have an accident. That threw me off a bit.”

LB CJ Mosley (toe) is listed as questionable Sunday and coach Robert Saleh said it would be “overkill” to expect him to play.

DT Leki Fotu (hamstring) is also listed as questionable. Fotu remains on injured reserve but has started training this week.

The Saints signed C Connor McGovern from the Jets’ practice squad.
