Tough loss for the Scarlet Knights.

4Q, 1:45: Kyle Monangai cuts UCLA’s lead to 35-32 with his third touchdown of the game

Monangai hit it in from a meter away.

Monangai lets the ball run into the goal from five meters away. Rutgers went for another two count but couldn’t convert it.

So now it’s 35-25 UCLA.

The TD was set up by a 59-yard pass from Athan Kaliakmanis to Ben Black on the left sideline, who brought the ball to the Bruins’ 5.

UCLA had second-and-2 at its own 25-yard line. Garbers hit a wide-open Keegan Jones near the right sideline at the UCLA 40 and Jones ran untouched into the end zone for a 67-yard touchdown catch.

It’s now 28-19 Bruins.

It’s now 21-19 UCLA.

Rutgers tried fourth-and-9 from the UCLA 35 and Kaliakmanis hit Chris Long over the middle for an 18-yard gain.

But the Scarlet Knights couldn’t make it into the end zone and had to settle for the field goal.

The Scarlet Knights went 75 yards in five plays in 2:15, capped by Kyle Monangai running the ball home from six yards out. Rutgers wanted two but couldn’t convert.

So it’s 21-16 UCLA.

Monangai had a 30-yard run on the drive to get the ball to the UCLA 13.

Not a good performance from the Rutgers defense.

UCLA, which has one of the worst defenses in the country, has 300 yards of total offense. QB Ethan Garbers is 21 of 25 for 224 yards and two touchdowns.

Rutgers’ offense was decent, but the defense just didn’t do its job.

After Rutgers’ field goal cut UCLA’s deficit to four, the Bruins needed 46 seconds for a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that ended with Garbers hitting TJ Harden for a 22-yard pass.

Rutgers’ tackling wasn’t good today.

Garbers had consecutive passes of 20 and 18 yards on that drive to move into Rutgers territory.

No touchdown, but the Scarlet Knights scored a few points on this drive that stalled at the UCLA 31.

It’s now 14-10 UCLA.

On second-and-12 from the Rutgers 49, Ethan Garbers maintained control, managed to elude Desmond Igbinosun and ran 49 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.

It’s 14-7 Bruins.

The Scarlet Knights tied the game.

Rutgers went 75 yards in eight plays, but was capped by QB Athan Kaliakmanis, who kept the ball and scored from one yard out to tie the game at 75 yards.

The highlight of the drive was a 42-yard pass from Kaliakmanis to Ian Strong, who made a beautiful one-handed catch down the right sideline.

The game is tied 7-7.

Well, that happened quickly.

UCLA opened the game with a 75-yard scoring drive, capped by a five-yard pass from Ethan Garbers to Logan Loya. The Bruins’ balanced drive with six pass attempts and five rushes.

Rutgers’ defense is banged up, although cornerback Robert Longerbeam, linebacker Tyreem Powell and safety Flip Dixon all got into the game.

Regardless, it wasn’t a good start for the Scarlet Knights’ defense.

Rutgers vs. UCLA Prediction, Tips, Odds

Rutgers is a five-point favorite according to Action Network as of October 18.

O/U: Over 41 (-112), Under 41 (-109)

Money line: Rutgers -194, UCLA +159

Forecast: This probably won’t be as easy a game for Rutgers as people think. UCLA gave Minnesota a good fight and the Golden Gophers beat Southern California the previous week. Anything can happen in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights need to get their running game going early and allow that to set up the pass. Rutgers’ defense is banged up but should still be able to limit a fairly lackluster offense. Rutgers 24, UCLA 17
