Rival GM upsets Cowboys’ Jerry Jones for 4th-round pick Jonathan Mingo: ‘Way too rich’

The Dallas Cowboys have had a rollercoaster season so far, but at 3-5, owner Jerry Jones proved the team would be a buyer, not a seller, ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

Dallas acquired second-year wide receiver Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers, giving up a 2025 fourth-round pick. The Cowboys also received a 2025 seventh-round pick from Carolina.

But at least one rival GM thought Jones’ move was too much, as NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported.

“I asked a GM from another team for his thoughts on the Cowboys trade for Jonathan Mingo,” Slater wrote on X. “The thoughts were something ‘talented’ (round pick). He probably resembles (Jalen) Tolbert the most.

“The GM goes on to say, ‘Just my opinion. Not a bad player, but bringing in a fourth player is rich.”

Mingo was a big prospect when he left Ole Miss, but nothing ever materialized in Carolina after they took him in the second round last season after selecting Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick.

Another rival Cowboys GM told Slater that Mingo’s “skills” were there but he was “raw.”

This season, Mingo has completed just 12 passes for 121 yards with no touchdowns.

Unlike rival front office executives, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III was surprised that Jones also made the move for Mingo.

“The Dallas Cowboys gave up more to get Jonathan Mingo than the Kansas City Chiefs gave up to get DeAndre Hopkins. Lord have mercy,” Griffin III posted on X.

There was more criticism of Jones and the Cowboys’ decision on social media. Many said Dallas made all the wrong moves this year.

Jones has been criticized for his roster construction in recent seasons, but perhaps none more so than for the 2024 season. The Cowboys, normally a very aggressive team when it comes to free agents, were cautious this past offseason. Jones even said that he never considered Derrick Henry, the league’s current offensive player of the year, even though the Cowboys needed a running back after Tony Pollard hit free agency.

Dallas eventually reunited with Ezekiel Elliott, although that didn’t work out this season and was recently disciplined for “habitual tardiness.” Rico Dowdle has taken over the role of starter in the backfield.

With a sub-.500 record and Dak Prescott set to miss at least the next four games because he is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, Jones is doing what he can to provide Cooper Rush with enough to keep the ship afloat a potential wildcard spot in sight.

However, Mingo’s move is just another criticized move by Jones, who in the eyes of many has failed to push the right buttons this year.
