Rising levels on the Withlacoochee River are impacting homes and businesses

DADE CITY, Fla. – Roads in Pasco and Hernando counties are seeing rising water as areas along the Withlacoochee River remain at risk of flooding in the wake of Hurricane Milton.

What you need to know

  • After Hurricane Milton, parts of Pasco and Hernando counties are experiencing flooding due to increased water levels on the Withlacoochee River
  • Rising water masses can be observed along county roads, affecting not only houses but also local businesses
  • At Sawmill Camping Resort, rising water levels can be seen throughout the campground and RV resort
  • County officials have told resort staff that the Withlacoochee River has not yet crested, meaning more flooding could be on the horizon

The river’s flooding is not only impacting homes, but also local businesses.

Phyllis Williams rides her golf cart at Sawmill Camping Resort and talks about her difficult week while surveying the damage caused by Hurricane Milton.

“We just have to wait for the water to go down and see what damage we have to repair after that,” she said. “We downed a lot of trees and a lot of power lines.”

The damage sustained during Milton is made all the more painful as water levels continue to rise on the Withlacoochee River, which flows past the campgrounds and RV resort.

“The county has told us we are the only river that has not yet crested,” Williams said. “Another half foot of water is expected to appear before it recedes.”

FDOT crews were seen clearing debris and brush from the road outside the resort entrance. Milton, as Williams said, did his share of damage.

Still, she hoped that her campsite would soon be back to the way it was before the storm.

“As long as everything else is stable, we will be able to reopen at some point,” she said. “But only when everything is safe.”
