On the final day of competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the United States won gold in women’s basketball and women’s omnium, as well as medals in women’s volleyball, men’s water polo and women’s wrestling. Team USA tied with China for gold medals and also won the overall medal count by an impressive margin, achieving its best overall medal haul since 1984.

Here are the top five stories of the day:

The U.S. women’s basketball team couldn’t have fought harder for its eighth consecutive gold medal and 61st consecutive Olympic gold medal, defeating France 67-66. Team USA trailed by 10 points early in the third quarter as France’s excellent ball movement, quick cuts to the basket and defensive pressure led to turnovers.

But the USA held their nerve and were able to reduce France’s lead with physical effort. France had no answer to A’ja Wilson – as is the case with most opposing teams – who dominated the play in the field and ran around the field to score easy points.

Wilson scored the most points of the game with 21 points and 13 rebounds, proving that she is probably the best basketball player in the world right now and was named FIBA MVP of the Olympic women’s tournament.

Kelsey Plum and Kahleah Copper each scored 12 points. Copper’s performance late — with 10 points in the fourth quarter — prompted a reaction from Wilson during NBC’s postgame interview that made for one of the most hilarious moments of the Paris Olympics.

Gabby Williams led France with 19 points, but had she had 20, the game would have gone into overtime. Her jump shot at the end went in, but she had her foot on the line for a 2-pointer instead of the 3 France needed.

Team USA won another thrilling battle for an Olympic medal on Sunday as the U.S. national water polo team defeated Hungary 11-8 in the bronze medal match.

Hungary scored three straight goals in the fourth period to take an 8-6 lead. The USA caught up and tied the game with two minutes left, but could not score on their final two shots and the game went into overtime with a penalty shootout.

In overtime, the US team converted all three of its penalty kicks, while Hungary’s shot failed to get past goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg and one of them hit the post.

The United States national water polo team last won a medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when it took silver after losing to Hungary. The U.S. team now has 10 medals in men’s water polo, while Hungary has 16 medals in this long-standing Olympic rivalry.

The U.S. also won a gold medal in cycling on Sunday when Jennifer Valente took first place in the women’s omnium. Valente won her second gold of the Paris Olympics and helped Team USA finish first in the women’s team pursuit on Wednesday.

For Valente, who also won the women’s omnium at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, it is the second gold medal in a row.

Valente finished first in the points classification after four wins, including the Scratch Race, Tempo Race, Elimination Face and Points Race. She was so far ahead of the competition in the final Points Race that she just had to finish to win gold. With a total score of 144, she beat Poland’s Daria Pikulik and Ally Wollaston of New Zealand.

The US cycling team won three gold medals and six overall, its best Olympic performance in 40 years.

The Italian women’s volleyball team was a disaster throughout the tournament in Paris, preventing the United States from winning gold at the Olympics for the second year in a row.

Italy won Sunday’s gold medal match 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17), ending a dominating streak in which they had not lost a single set after the first round of the group stage. The Italians started strong, forcing U.S. coach Karch Kiraly to take two early timeouts and never let up.

Italy had never won a medal in women’s volleyball at the Olympics, never even making it past the quarterfinals. With the silver medal, the USA won its seventh medal in women’s volleyball, more than any other country.

The United States added to its medal count with Kennedy Alexis Blades winning the silver medal in the women’s 76 kg final. No. 2 seed Yuka Kagami of Japan took a 1-0 lead before Blades tied the match. However, Kagami scored a takedown for two points with a minute to go and kept Blades at bay until the clock ran out.

Blades, 20, transfers to Iowa from Arizona State and will bring the first Olympic medal in women’s wrestling to Iowa City in the fall. She is the fourth American wrestler to win a medal at the Paris Games, joining Amit Elor (gold in 68 kg), Sarah Hildebrandt (gold in 50 kg) and Helen Maroulis (bronze in 57 kg).

The U.S. women’s basketball team and cyclist Jennifer Valente won gold, and Team USA tied China for the most gold medals at the Paris Olympics. However, the U.S. won the final medal count by a wide margin, winning more than it had in 40 years.

Dutch long-distance runner Sifan Hassan has achieved a remarkable triple victory at the Paris Games, winning medals in the 5,000 metres, 10,000 metres and the marathon. Hassan won gold in the women’s marathon and set an Olympic record with a time of 2:22:55.

Even more impressive is the performance that Hassan put in until about 250 meters before the end of the race, when she overtook Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa with her final sprint. She continued sprinting until she crossed the finish line.

Unfortunately, the Paris Olympics ended in disappointment for the US women’s gymnastics team and Jordan Chiles. Chiles was stripped of her bronze medal in the floor exercise after the International Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the appeal of her score was filed four seconds after the one-minute time limit had expired.

During the competition, Chile’s coach Cecile Landi lodged an appeal, saying the gymnast had performed a split jump correctly. The appeal gave Chiles enough points to overtake Romania’s Ana Barbosu and take third place, a decision that was controversial at the time because Barbosu believed she had won.

Late Saturday, the International Gymnastics Federation confirmed the decision, which dropped Chile’s score from 13.766 to the original 13.666. Accordingly, the International Olympic Committee announced Sunday morning that Chile’s bronze medal would be re-awarded to Barbosu.

However, that process may not be over yet. USA Gymnastics has formally appealed the ruling, providing video evidence that it claims shows Landi made the request for an investigation after 47 seconds, within the one-minute time limit.
