NEMAHA COUNTY, Neb. (KOLN) – Residents in the Village of Brock have been told they can return home after being advised to evacuate due to a large grass fire reported in Nemaha County Tuesday afternoon.

According to Nemaha County Emergency Management, a fire was reported on the north side of Highway 136 about two miles east of Johnson at 1:45 p.m

Fire departments from Johnson, Auburn, Brock, Julian, Tecumseh, Talmage and Elk Creek responded to the fire.

Emergency management said numerous local farmers with tractors and tillage equipment, as well as private companies with water hauling capacity, worked with firefighters to try to contain the fire, which was pushed north by strong southerly winds.

As a precautionary measure, an evacuation notice was issued for residents from Coryell Park up to and including the village of Brock in case efforts to contain the fire were unsuccessful.

The gymnasium at the Wellness Center in Auburn was made available to the displaced.

After about four hours, most of the fire is contained and firefighters remain on scene to monitor the hot spots and prevent the fire from spreading.

At 8:43 p.m., emergency management posted on social media that Brock residents could return to their homes.
