Republicans are within striking distance of the House majority as key races remain too close to a decision

A majority in the House of Representatives appears within reach for Republicans, who have already gained control of the Senate and the White House.

The Associated Press election forecasts show Republicans holding 209 seats as of Thursday afternoon, compared to 196 seats for Democrats.

So far, a total of five incumbent members of the House of Representatives are expected to lose their re-election – three Republicans and two Democrats.

Several races involving Republican incumbents in California are still too close to be decided and are expected to be crucial for the House majority.

Republicans in three Arizona counties and Republican lawmakers in Nebraska, Iowa and Oregon are also still awaiting outcome predictions.

Whichever party first achieves 218 victories will have a majority in the House of Representatives in the 119th Congress.

House Republican leaders have expressed confidence in an eventual victory, with the top four House leaders already formally announcing their bids for the same House majority spots in January.

“It looks like we’re going to keep the House and flip the Senate,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., told Fox News Digital on Wednesday night. “California is still the most important state. You know, in a lot of these close races, our incumbents are leading – by small margins, but we knew there would be small margins too.”

That’s a far cry from House Democrats, whose hopes of winning the majority are rapidly fading. Multiple sources told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that Democrats are prepared for Republicans to gain complete control of Congress and the White House.

However, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., pointed out that a Republican victory is not a given.

“It has yet to be decided who will control the House of Representatives in the 119th Congress. We must count every vote and wait until the results are clear in Oregon, Arizona and California,” Jeffries said in a statement in which he also congratulated President-elect Trump.

Democrats are projected to have scored important victories by unseating Republican incumbents in three New York seats – Reps. Marc Molinaro, Brandon Williams and Anthony D’Esposito.

Republicans are also expected to flip three seats — one held by Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., who is running for Senate, and two districts held by moderate Democrats in Pennsylvania.

The GOP also saw former House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry, R-Pa., expected to emerge from his toughest race yet on Thursday afternoon.
