Texas Longhorns wide receiver Johntay Cook II (1) reacts to a missed catch as the Texas Longhorns face Mississippi State at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Saturday, September 28, 2024.

Texas Longhorns sophomore receiver Johntay Cook is reportedly no longer with the program. OrangeBloods’ Geoff Ketchum says a source close to the football team has “confirmed” that Cook has been “fired.”

Inside Texas, which first reported Cook’s departure, says the split has been brewing for some time: “IT doesn’t feel the need to reveal the ‘locker room’ aspects of this split, but it has been brewing for some time while.”

Cook has eight catches for 137 yards (17.1 yards per catch) and two touchdowns this season, but the DeSoto product has not had a reception since the Mississippi State game on Sept. 28.

Cook, considered a key piece on the roster going forward, was pushed out of the rotation by the likes of Isaiah Bond, DeAndre Moore, Matthew Golden, Ryan Wingo and senior Silas Bolden.

Cook, a 5-star high school senior, was part of the highly touted 2023 recruiting class that included Arch Manning.

Horns 247 reports that the wide out will now enter the transfer portal.
