Report: Rockets and Jalen Green agree to three-year, $106 million extension

The Houston Rockets and guard Jalen Green have agreed to a three-year, $106 million extension to his rookie contract, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports, citing Green’s CAA agent.

According to the report, the deal will include a player option for the third year.

The 22-year-old Green is heading into his fourth NBA season. The Rockets selected Green with the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after the Detroit Pistons selected Cade Cunningham first overall.

Green, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 19.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 42.1% from the field and 33.7% from beyond the arc in three NBA seasons 3-point range shot. As a rookie, he initially signed a four-year contract worth $40.8 million.

Shortly after Green’s deal was announced, teammate and member of the same rookie class Alperen Şengün also inked a contract extension with the Rockets. He signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the organization. Shengün averaged 21.1 points and 9.3 rebounds in Houston last season, his career-highs.

Green and Şengün join Cade Cunningham (Pistons), Evan Mobley (Cavaliers), Scottie Barnes (Raptors), Jalen Suggs (Magic), Franz Wagner (Magic), Moses Moody (Warriors), Trey Murphy III (Pelicans), Corey Kispert (Wizards) and Jalen Johnson (Hawks) agreed to extensions from the 2021 rookie class before Monday’s deadline.

Green is a key member of the Rockets’ young core, which also includes Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson and rookie Reed Sheppard, all of whom are under the age of 23. With veterans Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks in the starting lineup, the Rockets are looking to make the jump from perpetual lottery woes to fighting for a playoff spot in the West this season.

The Rockets open the season on Wednesday against the Charlotte Hornets.
