Report: Fake $100 bills emerge from US bank ATMs while customers receive papers marked for ‘movie purposes’

Customers of a billion-dollar bank say they are shocked after a worthless trip to the ATM.

More than a dozen people received counterfeit $100 bills marked “For movie purposes” and “In props we trust” at an Independence Bank ATM in Providence, Kentucky, NBC-affiliated news station WFIE reported.

Among the victims is Tiffany Vaugh, who withdrew $400 in $100 bills and discovered when she spent the money that it was counterfeit.

“It wasn’t just me. There were several people who went to that bank and withdrew hundreds. It was just the hundred dollar bills, the rest of the cash wasn’t there.”

It felt real, it looked real, just like a crisp new $100 bill.”

In a statement, Independence Bank said it would “continue to work with our ATM provider and our customers to ensure corrective actions are taken.”

“Over Labor Day weekend, Independence Bank was made aware that a limited number of customers were receiving counterfeit money at our Providence ATM. Our team immediately responded by closing the ATM and contacting our vendor who manages and maintains our machines.

We have begun contacting the 14 people who were inconvenienced over the holiday weekend directly and have begun the processes to ensure they receive the correct bills.”

The U.S. Secret Service seized $21.8 million worth of counterfeit currency last year, according to the agency’s fiscal year 2023 report. The Treasury Department estimates that between $70 million and $200 million of the U.S. dollars in circulation are counterfeit banknotes.

Independent Bank’s total assets currently exceed $3 billion.
