The first day of early voting will be this week. Early voting for the November 5th general election begins on Wednesday, October 16th and runs through October 31st.

Those who choose to vote during the early voting period may vote at any of the early voting locations in Shelby County. On election day you must vote in your electoral district.

Linda Phillips, the election administrator for Shelby County, said early voting is highly recommended because it is easier for most people.

“If a voter is really unsure (of the location of their precinct), early voting is the way to go because you can vote anywhere. Any location is fine if you’re an early voter,” Phillips said.

As for recommendations for voters, Phillips said she recommends voters in the city of Memphis read the entire ballot before voting.

“It’s a very long election,” Phillips said. “Be voter ready, check and make sure you know where to vote if you wait until Election Day. Look at the sample ballot and know who you will vote for.”

Phillips also recommends looking up who is on the ballot in each voting district. There is a precinct search on the Election Commission website where voters can see which candidates will be on the ballot and what referendum questions some voters will be asked.

Congressman Cohen honored with EDGE Award

Congressman Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Memphis, was honored with the Economic Project of the Year award by the Economic Development Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County on Oct. 10 at an awards and community recognition breakfast.

During his acceptance speech, Cohen joked that he received the EDGE award before Elon Musk, who announced earlier this summer that his company xAI would build a supercomputer in Memphis.

In July, Cohen and several other Mid-South leaders announced that the Interstate 55 Bridge would receive a $394 million grant from the federal government to rebuild the I-55 Bridge, also known as America’s River crossing, should be used bridge.

According to previous reports, the Tennessee and Arkansas departments of transportation submitted a joint application through the Bridge Investment Program, the Large Bridge Projects Program. The grant came from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, also known as the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

Cohen was the only member of Tennessee’s congressional delegation to vote for the Infrastructure and Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.

Other Memphis leaders were recognized by EDGE at the awards ceremony – Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris and Memphis Mayor Paul Young also received EDGE’s Leadership Award.

EDGE was also recognized as the 2024 Local Ecosystem Development Agency of the Year by the Council of Finance Development Agency.
