Recovering Red Sox slugger impresses with exit velocity; is his return imminent?

The Boston Red Sox like what they see from their first baseman in rehab.

Known for his powerful bat, 24-year-old hitter Triston Casas appears to be returning to his usual form after a long recovery from a chest injury.

On Wednesday, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reported that Casas’ exit velocity had returned to elite levels.

“Triston Casas hit 3 balls with an exit velocity over 105 mph today in Triple-A (Worcester Red Sox),” Speier said. “This year, there are 7 cases where Red Sox players in the major leagues have hit 3 balls over 105 mph in a game: Devers (4x), Duran (2x), Rafaela.”

The news that Casas is back to his old strength is encouraging news for a ballclub currently battling for a wild card position.

Ironically, Boston’s offense has been in top form lately and doesn’t necessarily need Casas, but his impending return has nonetheless been hailed by some as a “game-changer.”

When will Casas return to the major leagues and what will it look like? And what does this all mean for Dominic Smith?

Alex Cora will have to answer these questions soon, but first the Red Sox want to sweep the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.
