Reba McEntire’s son Shelby Blackstock was just a child when he met Britney Spears and the moment left him speechless.

The country icon told the story during the American Music Awards’ 50th anniversary special on Sunday (October 6).

In a pre-recorded video, McEntire took America back in time.

“One of the funniest things that happened one year at the AMAs is that my son Shelby, who was about 12 years old, didn’t want to go to the show. He wanted to stay home and play his video games, and I convinced him to go with us.”

“We were right in the front row,” she continues. “And he was still a little upset until Britney Spears came over and sat right next to him.”

“And he said, ‘Oh my God,'” she says.

Country music at the 2024 American Music Awards

The American Music Awards have historically honored all types of music genres, including country music. Since the awards show was celebrating its 50th anniversary, a handful of country artists were at the event.

Kane Brown and Brad Paisley were in attendance at the October 6th show, both introducing various acts and performing for the audience themselves. Brown covered a bit of Alan Jackson before singing his hit collaboration with Marshmello called “Miles on It.”

Paisley honored the late, great Charley Pride before launching into his new single, “Truck Still Works.”

McEntire and Carrie Underwood both shared pre-recorded videos about past events that aired during the television special.
