Ravens 41, Bucs 31 – Bucs lose to Baltimore Ravens in Week 7

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost 41:31 to the visiting Baltimore Ravens in week seven. Overall, Baker Mayfield completed 31 of 45 attempts for 370 yards and threw three touchdowns and two interceptions, for a quarterback rating of 97.5. The Buccaneers marched down the field on their opening drive, thanks to a fourth-and-1 conversion on an 11-yard jet sweep by Jalen McMillan. On the next play, Mike Evans capped the eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive with a 25-yard touchdown, becoming the 11th player in NFL history to record 100 career touchdown receptions. The Buccaneers defense followed suit and forced a quick exit from the Ravens. Calijah Kancey dropped Derrick Henry in the backfield, resulting in a loss on first down, and both Yaya Diaby and Antoine Winfield Jr. were credited with sacks on the following two plays. On second down, Diaby looped inside and dropped Lamar Jackson for a loss of eight yards, and Winfield Jr. forced the punt on third down.

On the next possession, Mayfield hit McMillan, who beat defenders for a first down conversion. A roughing the passer penalty put the Bucs at the Baltimore 34-yard line. A shifty 14-yard gain by Bucky Irving after the catch helped set up Chris Godwin’s eight-yard touchdown. However, a holding penalty negated the score and led to a subsequent 23-yard field goal by Chase McLaughlin, giving the home team a 10-0 lead.

On the next drive, Baltimore marched down the field after a 14-yard gain by Charlie Kolar, an 11-yard scramble by Jackson and a 10-yard pickup by Isaiah Likely. Jackson capped the six-play, 70-yard scoring drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews, making the game 10-7.

After Evans suffered a deep incompletion on the Bucs’ next offensive series, Godwin scored first off a slant with a lead of 15 in the third. The drive ended with an interception by Marlon Humphrey in the end zone for a touchback. The Ravens followed with a four-play, 80-yard scoring drive, thanks to an explosive 59-yard play. Jackson rolled out of the pocket and scrambled to the right, looking down. He threw the ball down the field to Rashod Bateman and the Ravens capitalized on an 18-yard touchdown with Jackson and Justice Hill.

The Bucs’ next drive promptly ended in a turnover. Mayfield was intercepted by Humphrey at the Baltimore 40-yard line, sending Jackson and Co. right back onto the field. Just before halftime, Justin Tucker hit a 28-yard field goal to extend the Ravens’ lead to 17-10. After the Bucs started 10-0 and outscored the Ravens 140-8, the tide turned as the Ravens put up 17 unanswered points and outscored the Bucs 225-78 to close the first half.

After halftime, Trucker hit a 52-yard field goal, extending the Ravens’ lead to 20-10. On the ensuing drive for Tampa Bay, the Bucs sent Chase McLaughlin running for a 55-yard field goal on fourth-and-4 at the Baltimore 37. The attempt was futile and the Ravens had a 10-point lead. The Ravens then advanced down the field with a four-play, 55-yard scoring drive. Bateman worked his way over the Bucs’ defense and Jackson lobbed a 49-yard bomb downfield to Bateman, who hauled in the grab for a touchdown, giving the Ravens a 27-10 lead. The Bucs’ next drive ended with a third-down sack of Mayfield by Odafe Oweh, forcing a punt. The Ravens put the exclamation point on their lead with a subsequent 92-yard scoring drive in five plays, led by an 81-yard run by Henry. He quickly jumped out and accelerated down the left sideline. Henry was forced out of bounds by Zyon McCollum and the Ravens capitalized on a four-yard touchdown from Andrews.

An unorthodox turn of events early in the fourth day shifted the momentum to the Bucs. A Jackson fumble and subsequent McCollum recovery brought Mayfield and Co. back onto the field. In an initially sensational touchdown in which half the defense pushed McCollum back into the end zone, he was called back. He was ruled out, but the Bucs capitalized on the loss of the ball with a White touchdown and a successful two-point attempt to cut the deficit to 34-18. The Ravens immediately responded with an eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive of their own, culminating in a 13-yard Derrick Henry touchdown. He was wide open in the flat and Jackson passed to his favorite target, who spun up and crossed the goal line. On this play, the Ravens surpassed 500 total net yards and increased their lead to 41-18.

Late in the fourth, Bucky Irving plunged into the end zone on a one-yard touchdown rush after Cade Otton made a physical grab to give the Bucs a first-and-goal. Mayfield was sacked on the two-point attempt, leaving the score at 41-24. Tavierre Thomas then recovered the onside kick, bringing the Bucs’ offense back onto the field. The unit capitalized on a 23-yard touchdown. Mayfield hit White, who was wide open in the flat and turned north after the catch. The Bucs trailed 10, 41-31, after too many errors sealed the team’s fate.
