Raiders Week 6 Rookie Watch: Tight end Brock Bowers stands out again

Let’s take a look at how the Las Vegas Raiders’ rookie class fared in a 32-13 loss in Week 6 to the Pittsburgh Steelers and what it means to play a game at the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7. Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. PT.

Brock Bowers:

The tight end continues to be an outstanding player. He had nine catches for 71 yards. As Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said, Bowers is open even when he’s covered. He has 17 catches in the last two games. According to ESPN, he is the first rookie tight end in a decade to have back-to-back games with eight catches. No rookie tight end has done that in three straight games.

Jackson Powers Johnson:

The second-round pick from Oregon made his third straight start. He rebounded from a difficult Week 5 game against Denver and was strong in pass protection against the Steelers. However, he called a penalty that negated a touchdown against the Steelers.

DJ Glaze:

The third-round pick started the last three games in place of the injured Thayer Munford. He had his ups and downs, but held his own in the passing game against the Steelers’ superstar pass rusher TJ Watt. Pierce indicated that he envisions a bright future for Glaze.

Decamarion Richardson:

The fourth-round pick made his NFL debut after missing the first five games with a hamstring injury. He played eight snaps on special teams.

Tommy Eichenberg:

He was inactive due to a hamstring injury, a week after his first NFL start in which he struggled.

Dylan Laube:

It was a difficult decision for the sixth-round pick from New Hampshire. He failed on his first career rush attempt, setting up a Steelers field goal. It was his only offensive snap. He played 11 snaps on special teams.

Trey Taylor:

He made his NFL debut after being on injured reserve with a knee injury. The seventh-round pick safety played 14 snaps on special teams.

Not in the squad

Cornerback MJ Devonshire, a seventh-round pick, was cut and is on the practice squad. Taylor could soon be ready to play.

Unused free agents:

Linebacker Amari Gainer, defensive tackle Jonah Laulu and safety Thomas Harper. Gainer didn’t play on defense for the third straight game. He played a season-high 96 percent of snaps on special teams. Laulu played a season-high 24 snaps on defense and six snaps on special teams. He is a part of the defense, especially without Christian Wilkins. Harper played 5 snaps on defense and played a season-high 92 percent of snaps on special teams.
