Questions about Tim Walz’s military service draw national attention – ABC 6 News

(ABC 6 News) – Questions about Gov. Tim Walz’s military service are making national headlines now that he is running for national office.

This issue was also raised when Walz ran for governor for the first time in 2018 and again in 2022.

In 2022, Walz’s opponent Scott Jensen held a press conference with Tom Behrends, a retired critic of Walz from the National Guard. Behrends claimed that Walz was conditionally promoted to command sergeant major in September 2004 and resigned in May 2005 after being told he was going to war.

Eventually, Walz retired two months before his unit was notified of its deployment to Iraq and was honorably discharged.

At the time, Walz Behrends responded: “I don’t know if Tom just disagrees with my politics or whatever, but I think my accomplishments speak for themselves and my service in uniform speaks for itself. And in that crowd are also many people I have served and worked with.”

It’s now a talking point in the presidential campaign as Republicans Donald Trump and JD Vance have focused on a video in which Walz talks about weapons in war. It’s unclear what he meant by the statement, but Walz never claimed to have taken part in combat.

Walz served in the National Guard from 1981 to 2005 and did not participate in combat operations. Vance served in the Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007 and, while also not involved in combat operations, served as a military journalist in a combat zone.
