‘Put down the gun’: Police release bodycam video of deadly standoff near Ohio State

A video shows police officers searching for an armed man south of the Ohio State University campus.

On August 11, Columbus police were involved in a standoff that ended with the death of a Columbus man. Court documents and police confirmed that Asante Taj Omar Miller died around 1:15 p.m., approximately five hours after the standoff began in the area of Ohio State University’s south campus.

Investigators said it all started after a resident called 911 to report a former burglary was in progress at his home. According to police, the caller said the suspect had previously stolen another roommate’s car and had been asked to leave the house a month ago. The caller also said the suspect was known to carry weapons.

Columbus police have released seven videos showing the moment a restricted area is cordoned off for the SWAT team to respond. Police have not released videos of the SWAT team entering the home, but said Miller was found not breathing inside the home when they entered.

The first video shows officers approaching the residence and ordering the person inside to show them their hands. The person, Miller, then disappeared from view. As officers walked around the residence a few seconds later, an officer said Miller had a gun and radioed for more officers.

The officers searched the area for the suspect for several minutes. At several points, the police spotted Miller and ordered him to drop his weapon.

More than ten minutes after officers first made contact, police spotted Miller on the porch of an apartment complex, where he was walking past several apartments along the sidewalk. Officers approached him and repeated orders to drop his weapon. Miller climbed the stairs to the parking lot as officers approached him.

Miller froze for a second with what appeared to be a gun in his hand. He slowly took a few steps away from the officers, who then fired six shots at him.

He ran around the corner, followed by police officers. A few minutes after the shot, police surrounded and searched a residential building whose door had apparently been broken open.

Inside, an officer opened the door to a room and was met with gunfire from Miller. Several shots were fired before police left the house to set up a perimeter and wait for the SWAT team.

The SWAT team arrived at approximately 9:47 a.m., nearly 20 minutes after officers left the home. At approximately 12:48 p.m., SWAT officers entered the home and found Miller not breathing. He was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m.
