“Although many leaks suggest that the PS5 Pro will not come with a disc drive, I’m optimistic that this won’t mean the end of physical games. If the rumors are to be believed, the PS5 Pro will have a very similar design to the PS5 Slim – which already has its own Digital Edition without a disc drive.

This visual similarity hopefully means that the PS5 Pro will also be fully compatible with the existing Disc Drive for PS5 attachment, which enables full disc drive functionality in a PS5 Slim Digital Edition. Having to shell out $79.99 / £99.99 for a separate attachment after the PS5 Pro is probably already quite expensive to buy would be a bit of a blow, but it would definitely be worth it if, like me, you already own an extensive physical games collection. Fingers crossed…”

At TechRadar Gaming, we have our own wishes and ideas, so I asked my colleagues to tell us what they hope to see from the presentation.

“With the PS5 Pro, it’s not just about performance. It’s about optimization. Contrary to what usually happens with console generations, we see that newer expensive PS5 games perform relatively worse than those from earlier stages of the console’s life cycle. Titles like Horizon Forbidden West, Rise of the RoninAnd Star Wars Outlaws all struggled to maintain a smooth 60 fps in their performance modes at launch.

This is something that needs to be addressed on the PS5 Pro in my opinion. More reliable performance for those who prefer higher frame rates is a must here, along with a more powerful internal SSD for faster loading times (and hopefully a larger 2TB capacity). However, since we’re already seeing 40fps modes in titles like Star Wars Outlawsaimed at people with VRR-capable displays, could establish itself as the new standard for big-budget AAA gaming.”

Sony seemed to have accidentally jumped the gun with the official announcement of the PS5 Pro. Ahead of today’s PlayStation 5 technical presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, the previously unreleased video was titled “PS5 Pro,” which kind of gives the game away.

We’ll give Sony the benefit of the doubt and assume that this was a mistake – although the video title “PS5 Pro” may have been intended for the time after the presentation. Seems a little too convenient though…
