Project to remove potholes on bumpy road near Yankee Stadium to begin next spring or summer

Bus drivers and passengers report that the ride on East 161 Street is bumpy – but things may soon improve.

The road that passes Yankee Stadium is riddled with potholes, especially near River Avenue. The BX6, BX6 Select, and BX13 bus routes all run through this busy corridor.

Some community members believe that motorists should be compensated for damage to their vehicles caused by uneven roads.

“They patch the potholes and the water comes back. There’s not as much room to drive,” a man named DeAngelo told our crews on his way to work. “If someone rolls over a pothole, they should be compensated.”

The Department of Construction and Design (DDC) is currently leading a road reconstruction project for this specific area on behalf of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The project will also include “adding bus stops, building bus terminals, curb and median extensions, and creating pedestrian islands to improve safety and access,” according to DDC officials.

The final design for this project is expected to be completed by the end of August and construction is expected to begin in spring or summer 2025, News 12 learned.

Thomas Alexander, district manager of Community Board 4, which serves East 161st Street, said the office is aware of the concerns and has been working with city officials on them since at least fall 2023. Sources in the Department of Transportation say the department has repaired 25,500 potholes in the Bronx this year.
