Predictions for Saturday: Vanderbilt at Georgia State

Vanderbilt is on the road for the first time this season, and it’s to the stadium formerly known as Turner Field, where they’ll play Georgia State. (No, I’m not going to look up what it’s actually called.) What do the writers of Anchor of Gold say?

Tom Stephenson

I’ve made it clear from the moment I looked at their roster over the summer that I thought Georgia State was bad, but even then I didn’t think they were bad because they “beat UT-Chattanooga with a field goal.” And that wasn’t even “dumb shit allows Chattanooga to stay in the game.” No, they were actually evenly matched.

That and Vanderbilt’s 2-0 start is all I really need to know. Vanderbilt will win by at least two touchdowns.

The selection: Vanderbilt 31, Georgia State 14

The SEC surprise tip of the week: I’m going to go out on a limb and pick Toledo (+10.5) instead of MISSISSIPPI STATE, which looked pretty bad for three quarters at Arizona State last week.

Last week we ate so many cupcakes we ran out of fireworks. This week we’re on the road to play Georgia State (excuse me, what?!), so we’re eating… I don’t know… something with Coca Cola? What the heck do people eat in Atlanta? Chicken wings in strip clubs? Pimento cheese… in strip clubs?

Anyway, what I am saying is that we should win this game too, and easily.

The selection: Vanderbilt 48 – Georgia State 17.

The SEC surprise tip of the week: I know this is really an upset for the Big XII, but the SEC team will still win. That’s right, after Boomer Sooner almost shit a damn king-sized bed against the Houston Cougartowns, Tulane (+13.5) will officially welcome them to the SEC. Happy joining, Boomers. Hope you like the crap.

Georgia Tech beat Georgia State 35-12 over the weekend after their game against FSU in Ireland. I think that’s probably a good benchmark for Vanderbilt here. Georgia State beat Chattanooga 24-21 in the second game.

My head tells me that the offense will be successful in the early going, building a 21-6 lead at halftime, then scoring two more touchdowns and a field goal in the second half. My gut tells me that there could be more points as the defense craves turnovers and the special teams could cause problems for the underdogs. Still, I doubt the defense can hold Georgia State to 42 yards in the 4th quarter.

The selection: Vanderbilt 41, Georgia State 13

The SEC surprise tip of the week: If I had to choose, it would be Florida over A&M for hilarity. Just give Napier sooooo little hope of saving his job. Also, I think A&M will be a lame mess against anyone with a pulse. I wish I could say SC over LSU, but I think the Bayou Bengals are talented enough to beat bad teams but poorly coached enough to lose to good ones.

Georgia State isn’t very good. We are, despite our logo! This game should be in the middle of the difficulty range, considering our previous two games as highs and lows. I just can’t really think of why we would have any trouble this weekend. I guess their quarterback seems OK? But our defense has looked good. I don’t know, man, this is a game I don’t want to get too cocky about, but I really think we’re going to steamroll opponents this weekend.

The pick: Vanderbilt 34 – Georgia State 13

The SEC surprise tip of the week: Florida beats A&M because that looks like something stupid that these two stupid teams would do. And it’s not a fun stupid game, it’s a stressful stupid game. Let’s say something like Florida against A&M, 13-9 or something stupid like that.
