Postecoglou experiences frustrating evening in Leicester

All the good and bad of Ange Postecoglou’s first season as Tottenham Hotspur manager were on display as the London club began their second season under the Australian.

Spurs completely dominated the opening period at the King Power Stadium against Leicester City, playing a colourful, adventurous brand of football with attacking full-backs and flowing moves that kept their newly promoted opponents at bay.

However, they were only able to prove their superiority with one goal, scored by right-back Pedro Porro.

This left them vulnerable and they paid the price for a well-known defensive error when the experienced Jamie Vardy equalised with the Foxes’ first shot on goal.

“Disappointing result,” said Postecoglou.

“The first 15 to 20 minutes were very dominant and wasteful, but you know that when the score is 1-0 the opponent still has a chance to come back into the game.”

“I’m just really disappointed that we lacked a bit of punch in the front third, we made some bad decisions, we lacked a bit of composure and we didn’t get the reward that our football deserved.”

“We had similar problems last year and if we want to reach the next level as a team and close the gap to the top teams, this is an area of the game where we need to improve.”

Postecoglou, Australia’s biggest football export at the moment, has made a positive impression in his first season but the pressure is always on in the Premier League and he will need to build on that and finish in the top four.

This year he has more members of his own squad and, apart from Yves Bissouma, had the full group to choose from.

The Mali midfielder was dropped after posting a video on social media of himself inhaling laughing gas, which is illegal to possess in England.

Postecoglou could also include Dominic Solanke, the club’s record signing, a STG65 million (AUD125 million) signing from Bournemouth who started up front alongside Brennan Johnson and Heung-min Son.

Leicester were unable to bring back their biggest signing of the previous season, midfielder Oliver Skipp, who left Spurs earlier in the day as part of Postecoglou’s squad reduction for an initial fee of £20 million (A$39 million).

City have been unable to strengthen since promotion due to concerns over Financial Fair Play regulations. New manager Steve Cooper, previously at Nottingham Forest, led the team with the now 37-year-old former England striker Vardy.

He was largely a spectator during the first half while his former Foxes teammate James Maddison dictated the play.

Porro’s goal underlined Tottenham’s attacking style. Despite playing at right-back, he was on the offensive throughout, sneaking into the box just before the half-hour mark to head in a cross from Maddison, who had been given too much time by an opponent who should have known better.

At this point, Solanke should have scored his first Spurs goal. Nevertheless, a second Tottenham goal seemed certain. Shortly before the hour mark, the unmarked Vardy headed in the unexpected equalizer after a cross from Abdul Fatawu.

Postecoglou made a quadruple substitution, then a double, but Spurs could not regain their superiority.

In fact, both teams could have won, with both City’s Wilfried Ndidi and Tottenham substitute Richarlison coming close to scoring in the final minutes.

Rodrigo Bentancur had to leave the field on a stretcher during the second half, but was reportedly conscious and fine.
