Polls in Michigan close at 8 p.m. When will we know the results?

Polls will close at 8 p.m. across most of Michigan after a busy, high-stakes Election Day, with only four counties in the western Upper Peninsula remaining open for another hour.

For Michigan counties on Eastern Time, expect results to be reported later tonight as counties finish entering ballots on their ballots.

Michigan’s secretary of state said the first batch of voting will include both mail-in ballots already counted and early ballots, which number about 3.3 million.

The vote is then reported to county executives and the state on Election Day. Election winners and losers are predicted as the night progresses.

Jocelyn Benson told reporters early Tuesday that voter turnout is expected to be higher than in 2020, which saw some of the highest voting numbers in years.

Jocelyn Benson said voting operations went smoothly except for some disruptions at a polling place in Northville Township due to a gas leak. Arrests also occurred after individuals were found to be threatening political violence.

Those closely monitoring election results advise against making assumptions about the incoming numbers and what they mean. Incomplete data from districts that are still receiving numbers from precincts can create uncertainty about the outcome of an election.

During this period, misinformation could spread online, election officials warned. The best place to get verifiable information in times of uncertainty is the government website, found here.
