Polling location change on Treasure Island due to hurricane damage

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Election Day is just around the corner, but this year some Tampa Bay voters will be heading to different polling locations than in years past.

Hurricanes Helene and Milton forced some polling locations to close due to damage.

One of these buildings is the Treasure Island Community Center.

Like many buildings in the city, the community center was flooded during Hurricane Helene.

City spokesman Jason Beisel said when they saw the inside after Helene, they realized almost immediately that people there would not be able to vote on Election Day.

“It was a polling place for 22 years,” he said. “This year is the first year we have had to move it because of the storm damage.”

Working with Pinellas County Elections Director Julie Marcus, they set out to find a new location and were able to find one near Temple Beth-El.

Marcus said this isn’t the only location that needs to be moved, as 25 in the county were damaged by Helene and Milton.

“We’ve had a decline in polling places,” she said. “We had to move a lot of voters to different locations and combined locations or entirely new locations.”

This community center isn’t the only polling location altered due to damage from the hurricane.

Changes needed to be made in many Tampa Bay districts. So if you’re not sure where to go on Election Day, check with your county supervisor or your county’s election website.
