RIO RANCHO, NM — Two people were killed in a car crash Thursday afternoon on U.S. Highway 550 near Rio Rancho.

According to Rio Rancho Police, they, along with the Rio Rancho Fire Department, responded to a reported “major traffic accident” at US 550 and Northwest Loop. Police investigated and found that two vehicles collided as one of them attempted to make a left turn onto the highway.

Two people were killed in the accident. They were both in the car, which was traveling on US 550 at the time of the accident.

Three other people were taken to nearby hospitals in stable condition.

The RRPD issued the following statement on the accident on Thursday evening:

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends and community members affected by this tragedy. We also want to express our pride and appreciation to all the police officers, firefighters and medical personnel who worked tirelessly to save the lives of those affected.”

The accident closed the motorway for hours, causing heavy traffic jams. The motorway has been reopened, but investigations are still ongoing.
