If the Austin City Limits Music Festival had a “Miss Congeniality” award, it would go to Mike. The audience at the Honda stage on Sunday night consisted of Chappell Roan Backwash and his loyal fans, affectionately known as “Steves.” Real name Michael Francis Seander, the former Duke University baseball relief pitcher, embodies the heart and spirit of ACL Fest.

Throughout his entire performance, Mike. thanked the small crowd that had gathered to watch him perform and repeatedly emphasized his deep appreciation for the journey he has taken over his decades-long career. “All of these songs are about a standout moment in my life,” Seander said. “I came here because I played shows the size of this front row.”

Seander’s humility touched me. No matter the size of the crowd, his gratitude was palpable. Both of his parents even made the trip to support him in this career milestone. “When I look into the crowd I see some people, in fact my parents are here,” Seander said. “The older you get, the better friends you become with your parents. I’m also better friends with my dads.”

He even mentioned an unexpected connection to Austin. “I was never really a club guy. I lived in Hollywood for a while, but that wasn’t my pace,” Seander said. “I had a house on Lake Travis for about a year and we went to a bunch of bars out there on Sixth Street.”

The Rhode Island-born rapper, formally known as “Mike Stud,” maintained genuine enthusiasm throughout his hour. Around the same time, on the other side of the festival, Kevin Abstract had a completely opposite reaction. The former Brockhampton frontman complained about his lackluster crowd and was vocal about his situation to fans who came to see him. This piece isn’t about Kevin Abstract, but the real-time juxtaposition really shows the duality of presence the two rappers brought to the situation.

“I’m not here to preach to all of you, but all the lows are more important than the highs,” Seander said. “The points where I doubted myself that I wouldn’t be able to do it are such a central part of my story.”

Mike’s set wasn’t all leftovers, nor did he treat them as such. For this, I present him with the ACL Fest 2024 Congeniality Award.
