Play Ball! Popular Backyard Sports Video Games Return

Get ready for a flashback to your childhood because Backyard Sports video games are back.

Playground Productions announced Tuesday that it will revive the series of kid-friendly sports games “in the coming months.”

A trailer was also released, featuring a suburb, the clubhouse, Steele Stadium, and famous original characters such as Pablo Sanchez and Stephanie Morgan.

Films, television and merchandise are also expected to be part of the revival.

“We are incredibly excited to introduce Backyard Sports to a new generation of gamers,” said Chris Waters, CEO of Playground Productions, in a statement.

“We’re committed to preserving the look and feel that made the original games so special, while updating them with modern features and the gameplay that today’s audiences expect. I can’t wait to show fans what we’re building at the Playground.”

The Backyard Sports series began in 1997 with the release of Backyard Baseball before expanding to include basketball, football, hockey and skateboarding.

No new games have been released since 2015 and they are considered a nostalgic part of childhood for today’s generation of gamers.

“‘Backyard Sports’ is more than just a game; it is a cherished part of childhood for millions of people,” said Lindsay Barnett, creator of Backyard Sports and founder and CEO of Playground Productions, in a statement.

“I consider media to be the world’s largest classroom, so our goal is to produce meaningful content that not only entertains, but also educates and inspires. The return of ‘Backyard Sports’ is the perfect embodiment of that goal.”

Rumors of a revival began to circulate among fans after former Eagles center Jason Kelce said on his podcast that he was interested in bringing it back.

A Playground Productions spokesperson told IGN that Kelce was “not directly involved in this relaunch,” but acknowledged that Kelce represents an “audience that to this day fondly remembers Backyard Sports as a staple game with iconic characters loved by many.”
