Plans in the works to prevent trucks from getting stuck at Northgate Mile Underpass – LocalNews8.com

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – Over the past few months, several trucks have become stuck under the Northgate Mile underpass.

Why does this keep happening? Are there any plans to do something about it?

The structure was built in the 1930s for the railroad and therefore did not meet today’s height standards, says Sky Buffat, PIO of the Idaho Transportation Department for Eastern Idaho.

It was only in 2000 that a roadway for motorists was built under the railway bridge.

“Since then, there have been continuous improvements, some more significant than others. There has been continuous monitoring,” Buffat said.

Fortunately, according to Buffat, there are plans to improve the underpass situation.

“(ITD) is working with the city of Idaho Falls on an advanced warning system that can detect the height of a truck long before it reaches that stretch of road,” she said. “Signs would start flashing, alerting road users that a certain height is required or one entirely different from the usual.”

Buffat isn’t sure when that system will be installed. In the meantime, she recommends truck drivers take alternate routes to avoid the underpass. While that might take longer, it will still take less time than getting stuck under the bridge.
