Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver Broncos odds, expert picks, how to watch: Faith in the Steelers remains

It doesn’t look like Russell Wilson will be getting revenge against the Denver Broncos, as the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare to start quarterback Justin Fields for the second straight game. Despite the unsettled quarterback situation and missing a touchdown in their Week 1 win, the Steelers are still a slight favorite on the road.

That’s almost entirely because the Steelers defense is one of the best in the NFL – after a dominant performance in Week 1 – and because they got to play rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who was making his second NFL appearance. Nix averaged just 3.3 yards per attempt and threw two interceptions in his Week 1 debut. Mike Tomlin also has a 24-6 record against rookie quarterbacks in his career as a head coach.

Given that and the notoriously conservative nature of the Steelers offense, points could be a problem in this game, and the 36.5 point total reflects that. This is the lowest point total in the NFL this week and one of only three games with fewer than 40 points.

Although the Steelers offense didn’t score a touchdown on Sunday, it still moved the ball better than in previous seasons, completing six scoring drives (all field goals) and having just two three-and-outs. Fields was able to make plays with his feet and extend drives and seemed to get more confident as the game went on, and the Steelers used more play-action passes to put him under pressure.

The Steelers have a record of just 31-40-3 against the spread as road favorites in the Tomlin era, but are 6-5-1 in such games over the past five years.

This is only the second time Denver has played as a home underdog under Sean Payton, winning the only other game.
