Pirates offense missing again in defeat against Cardinals

The Pittsburgh Pirates continued to deliver miserable results at the plate for the second night in a row, resulting in a 3-1 loss in the second game of the series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pittsburgh didn’t have much traffic on the runways until the eighth inning, when Nick Gonzales hit a double to left that gave Bryan Reynolds a base hit, and even with two runners in scoring position, the Bucs couldn’t score. Andrew McCutchen went down on strikes and Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded out to second base to end the inning. The Pirates’ only run of the night came back in the 2nd inning when Bryan De La Cruz brought Lance Lynn deep to center field.

St. Louis tied the game in the third inning when Luken Baker tripled to score Michael Siani from second base, who opened the first with a double. In the fourth inning, Jordan Walker hit a solo shot against Bailey Falter to break the 1-1 tie. Other than that, Falter was strong once again, allowing just two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings.

The Cardinals scored another run in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly by Nolan Arenado, but this was more of a safety, as the Pirates were unable to score in the ninth inning.
