Pinellas students will get another day off from school

To continue preparing for the return of students, Pinellas County schools will not hold classes on Tuesday.

Some campuses remain without power and cleanup efforts continue after Hurricane Milton.

However, district employees are asked to report for duty on Tuesday to help get the campus operational again.

The goal is that classes can take place again on Wednesday.

Individual schools have the discretion to hold sports practices and extracurricular activities on Tuesday with the approval of the principal.

School Board Chairwoman Laura Hine said Duke Energy has assured the district that power will be restored to all schools in time for staff to return Tuesday. School buses will use the extra day without students to review routes and see if they need to be changed, she said, and the food and nutrition department will make sure cafeterias are stocked and ready.

Shortly after the announcement, families began reacting on social media. Some said their children are looking forward to returning. Others expressed concerns about not being able to get there.

Hine acknowledged that some students and staff faced devastating circumstances after the storm and may not be able to return.

“That’s fine. We’ll work with them,” Hine said. “For those who can participate, it’s good to be open.”

A handful of people asked on social media about makeup days and urged the district not to take the week off for Thanksgiving.

Officials had no immediate information about the rescheduled dates.

A school board meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m Tuesday. Due to the storm, the event was delayed by a week.
