Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction beats Dave Navarro at Boston show

Jane’s Addiction’s concert in Boston ended abruptly on Friday (September 13) when frontman Perry Farrell attacked guitarist Dave Navarro onstage.

The fan-recorded altercation at Boston’s Leader Bank Pavilion broke out in the middle of the reunited band’s performance of “Ocean Size” when Farrell became angry for unknown reasons and punched Navarro in the shoulder. Farrell, 65, then continued to yell at the 57-year-old guitarist, who appeared confused, and the singer eventually struck Navarro.

“What the hell?” Navarro appeared to shout as crew members grabbed Farrell and dragged him backstage. The guitarist then took off his guitar and left the stage, ending the concert after eleven songs. Jane’s Addiction reunion concerts usually featured three or four additional performances.

Jane’s Addiction had not yet commented publicly on the situation at the time of going to press. Billboard has contacted the band’s representatives.

Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, took to social media shortly after Friday’s concert to share her side of the story in a lengthy message. “There was clearly a lot of tension and animosity between the members… the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite has been ignited,” Etty Lau wrote on Instagram alongside a video of the onstage fight.

“Perry’s frustration grew night by night. He felt that the volume on stage was extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the front row started complaining to Perry and yelling at him that the band was too loud and they couldn’t hear him, Perry freaked out.”

She added that there was an altercation backstage between her husband and Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery, who “put Perry in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach.”

“Perry was a mad animal for the next half hour – he finally didn’t calm down but broke down and cried and cried,” wrote Etty Lau. “Eric, well, either he didn’t understand what decalation meant or he took advantage of the situation and gave Perry a few unfair blows.”

Jane’s Addiction’s Live Nation-produced reunion tour, which sees the four original members back on the road for the first time in 14 years, kicked off in early August. At press time, the band’s next performance was scheduled for Sunday (September 15) in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
