Pellegrini: “Italy aims for continuous improvement” in the Nations League

Lorenzo Pellegrini is aiming for “continuous improvement” when Italy take on Belgium in the Nations League tonight and hopes Roma fans will put the club’s problems aside for one night.

It starts at 7.45pm UK time (6.45pm GMT) at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

You can follow the entire build-up and action in the live blog.

The Azzurri started this Nations League group with a big 3-1 win in France and then beat Israel 2-1 to move a three-point lead over their pursuers.

“It’s a difficult game against a great team, even if they are missing some players. The journey that we started last month with two good wins has just begun and we aim for continuous improvement,” Pellegrini told RAI Sport.

Domenico Tedesco’s Belgians are missing Kevin de Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Amadou Onana, but Atalanta man Charles De Ketelaere is in the starting line-up and could rely on a three-man defence.

Pellegrini expects difficulties between Italy and Belgium

“I think Belgium is well organized so it will be very difficult. If you are well trained tactically, you can overcome individual failures. We are on home soil and want to do well because Italy deserves success.”

As well as losing their last three meetings with the Azzurri, Belgium have not won a competitive match since May 1972, drawing one and losing four.

This game in May 1972 was a European Championship play-off 2nd game after the first leg ended 0-0.

Pellegrini has faced a lot of criticism from Roma fans this season, particularly after the sacking of Daniele De Rossi.

He’s back at the Stadio Olimpico tonight, but with Italian fans in the audience who should put club interests aside. What do Pellegrini’s thoughts play in this atmosphere?

“My goal is to be successful at the Nazionale because it is an honor to represent Italy, to be part of this team and to work with the coach.”
