Pay attention to the health of your trees as Tropical Storm Debby approaches

GHENT, WV (WVNS) – Trees can be an extremely valuable possession.

They can provide you with lots of delicious fruits and also firewood for the winter.

Sometimes trees can become a danger if you are not careful.

Hazards that can lead to dangerous tree situations include, but are not limited to: a vine choking off the top of the tree, self-pruning, softening of the soil, roots giving way, and high winds.

Although these situations do not necessarily result in trees falling, they can serve as warning signals.

Mathew Davidson, soil conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, offers some useful tips on how to avoid tree damage on your property.

“In many circumstances it’s not ideal, but if you can, trim back the tall trees around your house. Ideally, plant low-growing plants,” Davidson explained.

Davidson warned that oaks, maples and poplars are among the big trees to keep an eye on.

Another threat to native trees is the invasion of pests such as the spotted lanternfly.
