Philadelphia 76ers winger Paul George commented Wednesday that some fans booed him when he returned to Los Angeles to play against the Clippers.

“It’s stupid. I mean, I was a free agent, you know what I mean? This wasn’t about me demanding a trade or going against the team. I was a free agent. The team presented something, the team was friendly, and I did what was best for me in that situation.

“So there was the cheering. I appreciate him. Those were the ones I played hard for. I didn’t understand the boos. I still don’t get her when I go (back) to Indy, but she is.” What it is. It’s sport. I look forward to being back here next year and getting more boos.

George, 34, spent the last five seasons with the Clippers before signing a four-year, $211.58 million contract with the Sixers in free agency last offseason.

During his tenure in LA, George was an extremely productive player, earning three All-Star nominations and an All-NBA Third Team selection. He also helped lead the Clippers to their first Western Conference Finals appearance in franchise history in 2021.

The Clippers acquired both George and Kawhi Leonard in the same offseason in hopes of finally reaching the NBA Finals and winning a championship, but the superstar duo never managed to get over it.

Injuries were a big reason for this, as both George and Leonard missed significant time during their five-year career together. In fact, George played 56 or fewer games in each of his first four seasons in Los Angeles.

Last season was his best since 2018-19 at 74 games, but that wasn’t enough to get the Clips out of the first round of the playoffs.

George missed the start of this season due to a knee injury sustained in the preseason, but he has returned to participate in two contests, averaging 16.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists per contest, Made 2.0 steals and 1.5 three-pointers.

However, the 76ers have lost each of the two games in which he appeared and are now a disappointing 1-6, tied for the worst record in the NBA.

Philly was missing superstar center Joel Embiid, who hasn’t played yet this season because of treatment for a knee injury, but more was expected from the team, most notably George and Tyrese Maxey.

As for the Clippers, they were a pleasant surprise with a 4-4 start despite the loss of George and Leonard, who have yet to play in a game this season due to injuries.

They may be more of a playoff threat than most expected, while the Sixers have fallen far short of living up to their status as championship contenders.

George will have a chance for his first win as a member of the 76ers on Friday when he takes on the Los Angeles Lakers.
