Paul Finebaum on FSU’s loss to Georgia Tech: “I haven’t stopped laughing”

How much blame does he deserve? Evaluation of Florida State Seminoles QB DJ Uiagalelei against Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech Institute started the college football season in an electrifying manner, upsetting the 10th-ranked State of Florida in a 24-21 win at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, in walk-off fashion. With Aidan Birr and scored a 44-yard field goal as time expired, securing the win for the Yellowjackets.

Florida State entered the season as the favorite to defend its ACC title and was one of the most talked-about teams of the offseason. Greg McElroy asked college football analyst Paul Finebaum if that attention might have had an impact on the Seminoles’ disappointing loss in Week 0.

“Greg, you know the coaching staff, I mean, it’s hard to believe they’re going to let that affect them,” Finebaum said on Monday at McElroy and Cubelic in the morning“But you don’t know, every time you talk about not letting the noise in, it’s not five years ago, or 10 years ago, or 25 years ago. I mean, these people read and hear everything, there’s no filter.”

“So I find it hard to believe it had a profound impact, but that’s all people talked about and that was one of the narratives even before the Dublin game.”

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding Florida State this offseason, from last season’s College Football Playoffs cancellation to the exciting new additions to the transfer portal like quarterback DJ Uiagaleleiand the excitement surrounding their opening game across the pond. But Finebaum blames those outside of their program for their Week 0 slip-up.

“Do you know who’s to blame?” Finebaum asked. “It’s not the coaches, it’s the fans of Florida State. They acted like idiots and never stopped, even during the pregame coverage they kept showing their butts, and that’s why I didn’t stop laughing. I don’t know about you, you hate to be so cruel, but this is a program that has isolated itself, that lives on an island, whose fan base is disliked and disrespected. Not just by people just walking down the street in Birmingham, but by their own league.”

Together with ClemsonFlorida State’s possible withdrawal from the ACC was also a trending topic this offseason. Legal proceedings are currently underway between both programs and the conference regarding the allocation of rights.

“I mean, this is a program that literally threw scorched earth against the league it was in, which by the way it chose over the SEC 30 years ago, because it didn’t want to deal with the rigors of the SEC week in and week out,” Finebaum said. “Don’t believe me, just ask Bobby – well, you can’t ask Bobby Bowdenbut I talked to Bobby Bowden about it and that’s exactly what he told me.”

An unexpected loss in a conference game early in the season is just about the worst that can happen in college football, and that makes Florida State an exciting team to watch for the rest of the year and their potential future in the ACC.
