Paul Finebaum and Joey Galloway discuss whether this is the end of Dabo Swinney at Clemson

Georgia dominates Clemson in season opener

Dabo Swinney came into the crosshairs again after Clemson’s devastating defeat against Georgia over the weekend.

ESPN sees the main reason for the failure as the unwillingness to adapt to the era of transfer portals. Paul Finebaum thinks that’s it. Colleague Analyst Joey Galloway is not yet ready to put the final nail in the coffin.

But Finebaum repeated what he said on Sunday: This is how the empire falls in Clemson.

“Sadly, it seems like Dabo is really done at Clemson this time,” Finebaum said on Stand up. “We’ve written them off for a while, but they’ve held on. But on Saturday, they went up against the best player in the area and got beat up, and there’s no chance for Dabo Swinney. He can complain about the criticism, he can say he’s doing the right thing, but he obviously blew it by refusing to go through the portal.”

Galloway wanted to remind everyone of what Swinney has accomplished before and that he is still among the elite.

“Paul’s got a shovel out and he’s ready to dig a grave,” Galloway responded. “I don’t think we give Dabo the respect he deserves. There are two coaches who have two national championships, only two. When you look at that 10-win streak he had until last season when he got to nine wins, it sounds like Dabo was awful for years.

“Those two national championships weren’t that long ago, Paul. So when we talk about Dabo Swinney, all I’m saying is, can we pretend this guy is one of the greatest of all time? Because he is.”

Is the end near for Dabo Swinney?

Finebaum had seen this coming for years, after Swinney’s last national championship at Clemson.

“I don’t want to dig his grave because I think I did that a few years ago,” Finebaum said. “But the point is, I want to give you a statistic, and you can scream and holler or not, but you said all these other schools that want to hire Dabo Swinney, I’ll give an example that happened last January, a position was opened on January 10th at the University of Alabama.

“Why does this matter? Because it’s one of the most important jobs in the country and Dabo Swinney didn’t even get an interview. And by the way, for those who don’t know, Dabo Swinney has a degree, played football and won a national championship at Alabama.”

Finebaum stuck to his guns and said things couldn’t be better with Swinney.

“My point is that the top schools don’t want anything to do with him,” Finebaum said. “That’s why he’s not going to budge. He can stay at Clemson for a long time, although I hear from Clemson fans that they’re frustrated too. No, they’re not firing Dabo Swinney, but they’re fed up with his stubbornness.”

“And this is an issue that’s about four or five years old now. He just needs to adjust and then the program can get back to the top of the ACC. But as long as he stays stubborn, they’re not going to regain prominence.”
