Patriots discipline Javon Baker for rant on Instagram Live

Patriots rookie receiver Javon Baker fell out of favor with coach Jerod Mayo after posting a tirade on social media over the weekend.

Baker, 22, posted a video on Instagram Live on Sunday criticizing a police officer for issuing him a ticket.

In the video, Baker said he was dropping someone off at the airport when he was approached by a police officer and ticketed for “no reason.” Baker said he and the officer yelled at each other, after which the officer threatened to tow Baker’s car.

“If you tow it, it ain’t gonna hurt me,” Baker said in the video. “Come on, bro. You got other (expletives) to worry about. … You ain’t gonna start yelling at me and think I’m not worthy of yelling back. Who do you think you are? Just because you’re a cop doesn’t mean nothing, bro. My tax dollars are what I’m paying you for. Come on, bro, you work for me.”

Mayo was questioned about Baker’s video on Monday and the coach said he was disciplined by the team.

“Everything you just said in no way represents what the organization is about, in no way represents what we’re about as a team or how Javon needs to go out there and represent himself,” Mayo said. “We’ve worked it out internally. We had a great conversation. I think it’s a combination of immaturity and realizing the bigger picture that we’re on a big stage here and you can’t do these things.”

“As far as our relationship with law enforcement goes, I think it’s excellent. We will continue to strengthen that relationship in the future.”

When asked what Baker’s punishment entails, Mayo said he is not expected to miss any games.

“Not for that,” Mayo said. “There is a penalty, but not to the extent of missing a game. We didn’t see it that way.”

Baker was selected in the fourth round of this year’s draft, earning a spot on the 53-man roster, but has been inconsistent in his first NFL training camp and preseason.

Considered a potential threat from distance who can haul in 50-50 balls down the sideline, Baker has been criticized at times for drops over the last month. In three preseason games, he had 15 faceoffs, which was the most on his team, but finished with just five catches for 56 yards.
