Patrick Mahomes compares Travis Kelce to his 3-year-old when it comes to listening

Travis Kelce showed even more magic in Week 5 after he extended the Kansas City Chiefs’ drive before halftime by throwing a lateral to Samaje Perine for extra yards.

On a third-and-22 play, Patrick Mahomes threw a short pass to Kelce, who ran down the field to avoid some New Orleans Saints defenders and threw a perfectly timed lateral to Perine, who scored another 15 yards. That gave the Chiefs the lead on a four-and-1, which they converted and eventually kicked a field goal en route to a 26-13 win.

After the game, Mahomes explained what he told Kelce before the short pass, telling the 35-year-old tight end that the team just needed to get into field goal range. What happened after the pass was completely out of his control and he likened the moment to trying to get his three-year-old daughter to listen to him.

“I mean, I shake my head because I told him before the game, ‘I’m going to throw it to you so you can get in field goal range.’ And he secretly shoveled it all over the field,” Mahomes said.

“It’s like I’m talking to Sterling,” he joked. “It’s Travis, man. He’s a special player.”

Listening to instructions is not a strength for Kelce. But you certainly can’t beat him for that if he’s able to secure another 15 yards. It was undoubtedly a risky game, but Andy Reid made it clear at halftime that Kelce was working on his side kicks during practice.

The star tight end’s decision may have given Mahomes a mild heart attack, but it ultimately proved successful.
