Park fire 36% contained – “Almost vertical” terrain complicates efforts

Status update
Summary of the situation
COLD FIRE:

The Park Fire continues to spread in the Mill Creek area, although firefighters have made significant progress in building containment lines. Daytime highs reached the mid-90s at lower elevations, while humidity rose to 15-20%. Tonight’s weather forecast calls for humidity to increase compared to recent days.

This weekend will begin a slow cooling trend that will continue into next week as temperatures drop to seasonal averages or even a few degrees below. Wind gusts of 20-25 mph could occur over part of the burn area Sunday afternoon.

Light winds are expected until early next week. Large fuels will continue to burn, complicating suppression efforts.

This fire is difficult to contain due to the nearly vertical terrain, short fire history, and the amount of dead and fallen fuel. Firefighters continue to build direct lines where possible and the fire remains actively fought.

The teams work in extreme heat and difficult conditions.

Lassen National Forest:

Today, #ParkFire firefighters contained the fire south and east of Turner Mountain using direct line construction with aircraft support.

Tonight and into the night, teams will use direct action tactics, supported by night-capable aircraft, to contain the fire. Slight improvement in the weather is forecast overnight, which will support the combined efforts of firefighters. The collaborative, risk-informed strategies and tactics of all our partners will be implemented under unified authority.

The #ParkFire has burned 113,022 acres in Lassen National Forest.
