Pakistan vs England: Jack Leach secures record win in first Test in Multan

England’s 3-0 win in Pakistan two years ago was unprecedented and one of the greatest series triumphs of all time.

In the list of their best wins overseas, this probably doesn’t quite match the 2022 opener in Rawalpindi or their win over India in Hyderabad earlier this year, but will live long in the memory for the staggering numbers.

Even against the backdrop of an extremely flat pitch and some weak opponents, England’s batting performances are astonishing. The victory is all the more impressive considering the tourists’ short preparation time, inexperienced bowling attack and the continued absence of captain Ben Stokes.

Stokes boosted his return from a hamstring injury during that first Test by bowling in the middle during the breaks. He seems almost fit for the second test.

The captain would likely stand in for one of the front three, most likely Chris Woakes, who started England’s push towards victory by bowling Abdullah Shafique off the first ball of Pakistan’s second innings.

That the hosts fell to 152-6 at the end of the fourth day and were still 115 behind meant that their only realistic hope on the final day was to avoid an unwanted record of an innings defeat.

Jamal, who missed twice on Thursday, was hit on the head by Brydon Carse in the only moment of discomfort Pakistan felt in the first hour.

Salman assisted on his first innings century but was caught on the front pad as England turned to left-arm spinner Leach.

Jamal attacked Carse’s rebound and produced a towering top edge shot that Ollie Pope dropped as he stepped back from square leg.

But Jamal was left standing on 55 as Leach defeated Shaheen and Naseem within four balls, giving England only their second Test win by an innings in Asia, and their first since 1976.
