GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers beat and missed a young kicker for the second straight game.

After rookie Brayden Narveson missed his fifth field goal in six games, the Packers moved on and signed veteran Brandon McManus, who last played for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A source confirmed an ESPN report that McManus is signing a one-year deal with the Packers.

The team did not announce the move. It’s likely that McManus had to practice on Tuesday and the Packers decided to sign him. The Packers likely won’t keep two kickers on the roster, so the club will likely announce Narveson’s release on Wednesday.

The Packers are not expected to make a move with practice squad kicker Alex Hale, meaning it’s unlikely Narveson will be brought back to the practice squad. Once released, he will be subject to waivers and will be a free agent if he clears waivers.

The signing will draw attention, and not just because the Packers are giving up on Narveson.

McManus was available to sign after the NFL ruled Sept. 30 that he had not violated conduct rules related to a civil lawsuit filed against him during a charter flight to London last year while he was playing for the Jaguars , were accused of sexual assault.

The anonymous plaintiffs accused McManus of rubbing and rubbing against them during the Jaguars’ flight to London on September 28, 2023. McManus’ attorney called the lawsuit a “shakedown” and said McManus never met the two women. According to the Washington Post, an amended lawsuit releasing both women’s names was filed in early September after a judge ruled that the case did not comply with Florida laws regarding plaintiff anonymity.

General manager Brian Gutekunst has refrained from signing players with illegal or questionable behavior behind them, even if they have been cleared of any crimes. Gutekunst betrayed punter Matt Araiza a year ago, even though he was believed to have left a party where a woman was later raped.

McManus is entering his 11th season in the NFL and spent all but the last season with the Denver Broncos. Last year, he made 30 of 37 field goals for the Jaguars, including 25 of 27 field goals inside the 50-yard line.

The Jaguars decided not to re-sign McManus after he became a free agent, and he signed with the Washington Commanders in March. Commanders released him in June when news of the alleged sexual assault broke.

.Over the course of his career, McManus made 81.4% of his field goal attempts (253 of 311) and 97.2% of his extra points (312 of 321).
